The actors do not contribute much, and curiously it is Max Minghella who gets the most out of his, while Chris Rock is very much gone, and Samuel L. Jackson does not contribute practically anything. Visually reminiscent of Resurrection, that copy of Seven with Christopher Lambert, which means that I wish I was Fincher’s film, but it remains an almost television by-product, with an overexposed image and a yellowish tone that does not work. If at least he didn’t take anything seriously, if he was a bit more hooligan or if he really took the underlying theme seriously, we could scratch something. But it doesn’t. It becomes an excuse and an exploitation (if you want to see something good with that subject, watch Shorta shortly), and the result is a disaster on all levels and a downright lazy movie.
From the heat wave and crimes to phrases like “Jigsaw did not attack policemen” the situation begins to drift towards the unintentional joke. That the director of four installments of the franchise, Darren Lynn Bousman, allows a character to say something like that, when already in the second installment (directed by him), the central objective was a policeman, to give just one example (think of Dina Meyer and Danny Glover), suggests that the scriptwriters have not even bothered to investigate the saga itself a bit, and that it is the second film they have written about it. They are examples so that they understand the nonsense of a predictable script (the twist is seen coming an hour before it happens), less explicit than on other occasions and with terrible characters.
