Beyond Dieter and the hilarious way in which the main actor approaches him, the rest are perfectly interchangeable characters among other films, and their actors lack charisma, both on the side of the robbers and the agents of the law. Nathalie Emmanuel is the only one who brings something different to the formula and her chemistry with Matthias Schweighöfer works and is one of the reasons to see the film, although sometimes they overload that plot and make it repetitive. It’s not very surprising in that sense, really, and again, it’s the script’s fault.
It’s not a bad script, but it’s not brilliant either. And what in Army of the Dead was replaced by the sheer cinematic energy of Snyder’s direction, never reaches that level here. Make no mistake, because Matthias Schweighöfer meets and exceeds any expectations, and even makes a couple of particularly memorable sequences. But it is not the same as Snyder. In fact there are winks and tributes to sagas like Bond, Bourne or Mission Impossible, and it shows in the escape from a robbery, the fight at the bank, the final robbery or even the farewell at the dock. Maybe it takes a while to start up and should last a little less, but otherwise it is an entertaining, fun product, with a magnificent central character and lovingly made.
