Initially, the film comes across as a straightforward ghost story, but we soon veer in a different, more interesting direction. Here also come the parallels with Ari Asters HEREDITARY(2018) forward. The horror hit of 2018 brought together family traumas with occult conspiracies and was mainly driven by the brilliant acting of Toni Collette. Rebecca Hall gives a similarly great, but slightly less explosive performance. Her sadness, dejection and growing paranoia are conveyed so convincingly that she effortlessly guides the viewer through the film. Toni Collette aside, I’m still not completely convinced of HEREDITARY’s status and I even dare to say that THE NIGHT HOUSE works better as a story, precisely because it is a bit simpler. The metaphor on which the film ultimately revolves is hardly a metaphor, it is treated so literally. But not everything has to be Tarkovsky, nothing wrong with a horror drama that knows how to use the jumpscares well.
This was already the case with Bruckner’s previous film THE RITUAL (2017), which used folk horror and ancient gods to address regret and self-confidence. In THE RITUAL, subject and subgenre didn’t really fit together like puzzle pieces, but THE NIGHT HOUSE certainly succeeds in this. Several studies have shown that the risk of suicide increases when a loved one chooses to take their own life, and it seems that the writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had this in mind. As the paranormal truth about Owen’s shadow life emerges, it remains tied to Beth’s depression and nihilism. So it’s no real surprise that Collins and Piotrowski had previously written a script for a canceled HELLRAISER reboot.gore feast with hooks on chains, but you do have a beautifully recorded story of longing for what lies on the other bank of the river Styx.
