After a stroke, it becomes difficult for Judith to take care of herself any longer and she moves to the Golden Sun Manor nursing home. There she quickly finds new friends, but her roommate is not doing well. This one tells that she is visited at night by a dark creature. Are these nightmares or something else going on in this nursing home? With residents dying in strange ways, it seems like the latter… but now that she’s been diagnosed with dementia, even her family doesn’t believe Judith anymore.
As with the other Welcome to the Blumhouse titles, this one also revolves around a social theme and shows how reality simply contains horror. Old age with associated diseases such as Parkinson’s and dementia are a frightening outlook for many people. And as wonderful as it may seem that we can put the elderly in a care home, in reality it turns out that we actually visit them too little and take them less seriously.
The cast is great, with of course a huge mountain of experience, this can hardly be otherwise. Barbara Hershey carries the film as Judith with the help of Bruce Davison (Roland), Jill Larson (Trish) and Fran Bennett (Ruth). None of these actors are planning to get behind the geraniums at their age and are still working hard. Bennett passed away last month at the age of 84. The young Nicholas Alexander completes this list in his role as grandson Josh.
The story is well put together, the build-up is good and various horror styles are intertwined, plus the ending is slightly different than you would expect.
