Andrew Hunt’s The Infernal Machine returns to the very foundations of a psychological thriller, with a troubled protagonist, a slowly unravelling mystery about his past, and an unidentified sinister presence that will be revealed at the climax. After a slow-burning beginning that builds to a heart-pounding suspense, the reveal is at best basic. Guy Pearce’s somewhat Salinger-like reclusive lead, who has kept himself to himself for decades, eventually undergoes an emotional breakdown that is fascinating to watch. With its flawless setup, The Infernal Machine, an adaptation of The Hilly Earth Society podcast, builds up the anticipation to an incredible level, but the bubble bursts when the subpar climax occurs.
