The sequel to the successful and dignified “Sonic the Hedgehog” is a fact. After searching for friends, he is now looking for a paternal figure. The sequel moves on the same wavelength as the first, including a “goal” for the fastest protagonist that refers to another movie era.
The film stays true to the same character with the constant childish jokes that cause a little smile, without ever breaking it, except for a few points that require it. Returning to the younger ages, we see the protagonist making some trivial decisions and there is also the paternal figure of Tom (James Masden) who will give him the advice that will move the whole case. The two new characters Knuckles and Tails, the well-known characters from SEGA’s Sonic video games, are also introduced to the public, thus enlarging the “universe”.
Jeff Fowler is expected to use fast cuts that contribute to the overall light style of the film. The script has a much harder job to accomplish than the first one, because it has to introduce extra characters with backstory, which it does not quite do, but it does not matter so much in the end result. The cast, as in the first film, consists of a decent James Madsen who ties in with the role, and an overly diffuse Jim Carrey who does not fit in with the rest of the mood, although he seems to enjoy it.
