Because even though we’ve been following Aretha Franklin for a little over 30 years, it’s like we never really get to know her. There are, of course, a lot of people around her who make life miserable, and a very competitive environment that shapes Ree from her very young years, but all of her personal shortcomings that have had an equal impact on the music are completely ignored.

For example, her children play virtually no role in the film, despite the fact that she got them very early, under the worst possible conditions. Most flawed, however, is when we enter the last third of the film, where she suddenly goes from being a virtuous priestess, who is constantly trying to maintain the good mood, to suddenly being a rap-jawed, powerful and independent woman, apparently from one scene to the next. She also develops an alcohol addiction, but it stops as quickly as it begins. Not because she gains any great self-awareness, but because she hallucinates her mother, and apparently just decides to stop.

Nor is it really addressed how privileged she really was as a black woman in her fifties. Just as Mozart had a father who pressured him from the time he could walk, so Aretha Franklin had a wealthy father who was so ambitious on her behalf that he procured her her first record contract. Those conditions are, if not thoughtful then at least interesting, not to mention that she actually knew and was friends with Martin Luther King Jr., but none of these things get more than a surface treatment

I can well understand why one stops a bit to dive into these complicated and ambiguous sides of her life story, but not only a great drama is thrown, but also a portrait of a real person on the floor, to streamline the story. Watch more free Batflix Drama Movies online here without any membership.
