As soon as I left the screening of Doctor Strange , the new chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (wow, I was really co-opted), I commented with a friend that I didn’t remember hearing much about the character before meeting him in this production, but who would be very surprised if he wasn’t a child of the 60’s. In fact, no other period could inspire the exact conception of a figure like this superhero, who, from the look of his “uniform” to the themes he discusses, practically screams that it was generated under the influence – chemical or symbolic – of the psychedelic drugs that would become the basis of so many artistic movements in the following years.
Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Strange is a neurosurgeon whose competence is rivaled only by his arrogance and who, one night, suffers a terrible car accident that compromises the very steady hands that helped make him so efficient. Depressed by the failure of medicine to cure him, he ends up looking for a solution in the mystical East of cultural stereotypes, being welcomed by an Order that includes the patient Mordo, the brave Wong and the wise crone, which introduces you to a metaphysical universe that will make you able to manipulate time and space. However, the planet’s existence is threatened by the actions of the villain Kaecilius, who intends to summon a powerful being capable of destroying everything in his path – and it will be up to Doctor Strange and his companions to stop him.
